Over the past several years, New Vitae Wellness and Recovery has successfully operated three Residential Treatment Facilities for Adults (RTFA). These specialty programs were designed in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health, Community Behavioral Health, and the Beck Institute. The programs are specifically designed to assist individuals in utilizing a holistic model of care to manage significant behavioral health symptoms and return to their families and communities. Residential Treatment Facilities for Adults

In 2016, New Vitae Wellness and Recovery was selected as an award recipient by Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services (DBHIDS) to develop comprehensive residential treatment resources. New Vitae has established licensed and Joint-Commission-accredited services within the city to help people in Philadelphia access coordinated treatment services in the community. Services are individualized and centered on the recovery-oriented, evidence-based practice of Cognitive Therapy Recovery (CT-R). The program utilizes a full milieu-based program to engage residents in actively pursuing life interests and goals, building the necessary social and life skills to integrate into the community, where real-life learning and success can be obtained. Each property has the capacity to support 12 individuals to facilitate intensive, person-centered service supports, including mental health services, vocational, and physical health service options.

Referrals

Each site is prepared to serve men, offering integrated behavioral health services and residential supports for individuals seeking intensive, supportive services.

The Program

Services are staffed by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals. The team includes a board-certified psychiatrist, licensed psychologist, licensed mental health therapists, along with Care Coordinators, 24-hour nurses, Certified Peer Specialists, and Mental Health Workers. The team works with community partners, including Intensive Case Managers, Assertive Community Treatment Teams, Medical Professionals, and other professionals, as well as family and other allies of individual residents.

The recovery supports will provide individual and group therapies and peer support services. Individualized recovery plans will emphasize the development of independent living and symptom management skills, highlighting a variable length of stay aimed at increasing personal autonomy.

Evidence-Based Recovery Program

Together with our Beck Institute partners, the staff at the RTFA’s develop meaningful, reality-based recovery plans with the individual residents and their families. Beck Institute staff work side by side with New Vitae staff to ensure that interventions and treatment goals align with goals that assist the residents to build and increase capacity for greater independence.

All staff is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Recovery, and the principles of this model drive the program. We work tirelessly to engage individuals in their interests and pursue greater social connectedness and independence.

Community Integration

The Residential Treatment Facilities for Adults programs in Philadelphia are designed to support individuals entering a less secure level of care as a step toward community living. They are also designed to support individuals to regain the stability and skills necessary to live more independently in the community.

At the Residential Treatment Facilities for Adults, our staff is focused on finding ways to bring residents’ experiences, hopes, and dreams into the community. By engaging in therapeutic activities within the community setting, residents are able to learn skills in real-life settings making the transfer of these lessons much easier and affording them success in the real world.

Our commitment to integrating residents into the real world is demonstrated by how we work to facilitate activities in the community. For example, rather than discussing buying groceries or budgets, residents work with staff to plan and shop together in the community. Residents are engaged in building social skills through activities in local stores, parks, libraries, and community centers. Another example of active community integration is in developing healthy strategies for leisure and coordinating activities with local organizations to facilitate socialization and healthy recreation.

Community Partnership

Our program staff has developed relationships with other organizations to support these activities. For example, we have built collaborative arrangements with local libraries for literacy education, participating in community-based lectures & presentations, and borrowing books, music, and movies. We have also developed such arrangements with the local YMCA for fitness, swimming, and other leisure activities.
