Frequently Asked Questions

What is residential treatment?

Residential treatment is a supportive level of care that combines housing with integrated behavioral health services. Designed for individuals managing mental health conditions, substance use disorders, or brain injuries, this model provides 24/7 structure while encouraging independence and community living.

Unlike inpatient hospitalization, residential treatment takes place in real-world settings where individuals can receive medication support, therapy, and assistance with daily living skills. It bridges the gap between clinical care and independent living—creating space to practice new coping skills, build relationships, and pursue personal goals in a safe and supportive environment.

How are medical needs addressed?

At New Vitae Wellness and Recovery, medical care is a key part of our holistic approach. While we are not a medical facility, our programs meet all Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) standards for Personal Care Homes, including having nursing staff as part of our care team. Medical needs are supported through:

  • On-site nursing staff to assist with health monitoring, medication administration, and coordination of care

  • Staff support for medical appointments, including scheduling, reminders, and transportation assistance

  • Access to local physicians and specialists throughout the Lehigh Valley, Bucks County, and Philadelphia regions

  • Wellness programming, including exercise opportunities and access to a registered dietitian for nutritional guidance

This approach ensures that physical health and wellness are thoughtfully integrated into each individual’s recovery journey.

What types of social, recreational, and leisure activities are offered within the program?

We believe that social connection and meaningful activity are essential to recovery and well-being. That’s why every resident receives a YMCA membership and access to a wide range of recreational, cultural, and community-based experiences.

Activities are planned with individual preferences in mind and may include:

  • Arts and music events

  • Group outings to concerts, theater, or museums

  • Hiking, camping, and day trips (including our annual Cape May beach retreat)

  • Yoga, games, and group classes

  • Shopping, dining, and local events

  • Dances, karaoke, and seasonal celebrations

Whether it’s through a shared community meal or a weekend nature trip, we offer opportunities to connect, explore interests, and support whole-person recovery.

Is smoking and vaping allowed?

Smoking and vaping are permitted only in designated outdoor areas, and may be limited to specific times depending on the location. We maintain these guidelines to promote health and safety while respecting individual preferences. Residents are expected to follow site-specific rules and use designated spaces respectfully.

How do we support family and friend involvement?

We believe strong connections with loved ones are essential to healing and growth. Our team actively supports regular communication and meaningful involvement from families and allies.

  • Flexible Visiting Options: Families can visit at convenient times based on program structure.

  • Home Visits: Encouraged when clinically appropriate to maintain key relationships.

  • Ongoing Communication: Care coordinators facilitate calls, video chats, and email updates.

  • Family Sessions: Offered to help improve understanding, collaboration, and shared goals.

  • Events & Education: Complimentary family events and workshops foster connection and shared experiences.

What are the accommodations like?

New Vitae offers a variety of residential settings to meet individual needs and preferences. Options include:

  • Private and semi-private bedrooms, with individual or shared bathrooms.

  • Fully furnished spaces, which residents are encouraged to personalize.

  • Multiple levels of support, from enhanced personal care homes to staffed or semi-independent apartments.

Each setting is designed to promote safety, comfort, and a sense of belonging.

What are dTMS and CES?

New Vitae Wellness and Recovery offers two innovative treatment options that can support mental health recovery:

  • dTMS (Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation):
A non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic fields to stimulate areas of the brain linked to depression. It can be used on its own or alongside medication.

  • CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation):
A low-level electrical stimulation shown to help reduce symptoms of anxiety and insomnia.

These services are safe, FDA-cleared, and have helped many individuals experience symptom relief—especially when combined with other treatments.
